Penang wins group to set up showdown with melaka

Mighty kicks from the players of the Negeri Sembilan and Perlis teams.

9th November, 2006 (KUALA LUMPUR): A solitary second-half strike from Amirul Sazali Roslan was all it took for Penang to top Group B and set-up a quarterfinal encounter against Melaka in the 100Plus Super Cup Under-12 National Finals this morning.

The islanders, who had started the decisive match today on even six points with joint leaders Selangor, knew they had to beat the Klang Valley side in order to emerge group champions.

But while Selangor stuck to the same patient game they used to full effect in their earlier matches, there was no denying Penang victory in the 23 rd minute when Amirul latched on to a cross from the right to slam the ball home.

With the win, Penang will take on Melaka in the first match of the quarterfinals tomorrow morning while Selangor will entertain Kelantan.

In other quarterfinals ties, Kuala Lumpur will play Sarawak while Terengganu will be tested by Negeri Sembilan.

The winning teams from the quarterfinals will go on to play in the semifinals scheduled for 4pm at the same venue of the SMK Victoria tomorrow afternoon.
